The Best and Worst of Colourpop!

I have tried a plethora of products from Colourpop over the years and while many of them sparked my creativity and fed my newfound love of makeup, many of them fell flat! Colourpop is a relatively affordable brand. I would feel comfortable calling them drugstore-adjacent. Over the last few years, their prices have definitely crept up a little bit, especially in the complexion category, but overall, they are still much cheaper than anything at Sephora. I have compiled a list of my top 5 and bottom 5 products from Colourpop. They are in no particular order and these rankings are just my opinion based on my super dry skin type and affinity for shiny things. If anything I said was bad worked out for you, that's awesome and I am so happy for you! If you prefer a visual medium, click here to watch my video review of these products!

Alrighty, let's start off on a positive note. The best of the best from Colourpop! 1. Colourpop Lux Lip Gloss Oh my goodness. This lip gloss is top tier and its only $8! Before trying this gloss, my favorite gloss formula was the Fenty gloss. I was thrilled to discover that the Colourpop Lux gloss is 100% a dupe for the Fenty gloss and it smells way better! That was my only gripe with the Fenty gloss. It smelled very weird and had a weird taste. The Colourpop Lux gloss has a light but sweet scent and feels just as hydrating and luscious as the Fenty one. I have the shade "Tied Up" which is a perfect dupe for Fenty's "Fu$$y". I still love Fenty as brand and will definitely continue to support them but it is nice to know that there is a gloss option from Colourpop that works the same and is $11 cheaper.

2. Fourth Ray Beauty Glisten Up Mist This is THE mist if you are a lover of glowy setting sprays like me! It is the only glowy setting spray that I've ever used that actually delivers on its claim. It gives the skin a very natural looking glow without leaving glitter particles all over your face. The mist is super fine and won't leave any water droplets on your face. It claims to have some brightening skin care benefits from Vitamin C, though I'm not sure there's enough of that ingredient to really see a difference in your skin, especially when applied over makeup. It does have a subtle orange fragrance which I don't mind and hasn't seemed to break me out, though I wouldn't recommend incorporating this mist into your actual skin care routine because of the fragrance, added shimmer particles and artificial dyes. 3. Colourpop QT Mark Freckle Pen

I have a whole blog post and video reviewing this product individually if you really wanna dive deep into my review but all I'll say now is that I think it is amazing that Colourpop came out with an affordable faux freckle option. Faux freckles are a huge trend right now and although you can achieve a similar look by using a brow pencil or eyeshadow, I definitely prefer the look using a felt tip pen. Brands like Freck and Pseudo Labs have really been controlling the fake freckle market up until now and while their products look super nice, they are way out of my price range. Freck's pen is $22 and Pseudo Labs' is $38. Colourpop's QT Mark freckle pen comes in at a cool $8 and I love the look it gives!

4. Colourpop Super Shock Shadows
The formula of these eyeshadows has to be felt to be believed! I hope that everyone reading this gets the chance to touch a Colourpop super shock shadow in their lifetime because wow! They truly take every look to the next level. While I think Colourpop's pressed shimmer eyeshadows are pretty good, I think their super shock shadows blow their shimmers out of the water. They make the eyelids look wet and they catch the light so beautifully. I always recommend that if you are tempted to buy a Colourpop eyeshadow palette because of the shimmers, pick up a couple of super shock shadows instead! They can transform the shadows you already have or be worn on their own. They are $6 each and are absolutely worth it. I'm especially a fan of the shades "I Like You" which is a vibrant orange with pink iridescence to it and "Flux With You" which is a super bright coppery gold. Just be aware that after a couple of years, they do dry out and their performance diminishes.
5. Colourpop Loose Pigments
Okay, if you like the Colourpop super shock shadow formula, you will LOVE their loose pigment formula. If super shock shadows make your eyelids look wet, the loose pigments make your eyes look so bright you could see them from outer space! This formula from Colourpop is so unique and unlike any other loose pigment I've tried before. You can layer them over matte or shimmery shadows to make that color look extraterrestrial or you can wear them on their own and look like your eyelids are drenched in jewels. I personally love the shades "The Crab" which is a duochrome-y blue/purple shimmer and the shade "The Maiden" which is a transparent white gold that has so many different colors of shimmer in it, it truly makes your eyelids look wet. You can also wear these pigments on the face as some colors look great as a highlight! They perform well dry but if you wet them, they're out of this world.

Alright, now let's move on to the products that I consider to be the worst I've tried from the brand.
1. Colourpop Matte Eyeshadows
Colourpop's matte shadow formula is not bad as a whole, but it is too inconsistent for my liking. I find that their mattes tend to perform better in lighter neutral shades like your beiges, taupes and creams, while their deeper shades, particularly deeper colorful shades, do not perform well. The shades I explored in my video review were the deep mattes in the Kathleen Lights "So Jaded" palette. The deep Sapphire blue and deep Garnet red swatch really beautifully and deliver a great amount of pigment but just do not blend well. It is such a shame because the colors are super beautiful but so hard to work with that I rarely ever reach for them. If you are looking for a matte brights formula that is amazing, check out the indie brand, By Melolops and their Radioactive Palette. That one is super high pigment but blends effortlessly!
2. Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks
I feel like this one goes without saying, but this matte formula has my lips looking like I am employee of the month at The Crusty Crab. I know that in 2017, the big trend was to have the driest looking lips possible, but thank goodness that trend has past. I am just confused as to why Colourpop still carries this formula. It appears they have come out with a new Lux Velvet liquid lipstick which I hope is a more comfortable formula because the Ultra Matte is anything but. If you are looking for a matte liquid lipstick that feels super comfortable and has a wide range of colors, check out Coloured Raine's liquid lipsticks!

3. Colourpop Flex Foundation Stick When I tried this foundation formula from Colourpop for the first time, I thought my dry skin was the problem. It clung to every dry patch on my face and made it look so cakey and horrible. After trying the Milk Makeup Flex Foundation Stick and having it be super creamy and beautiful, I came to realize that foundation sticks as a whole were not the enemy of dry skinned folks like me, Colourpop's foundation stick was. I am not even sure that their foundation stick would look good on oily skin as my T-zone is fairly oily and it even looked cakey there. I have not seen Colourpop promote this product at all other than the first few weeks it came out so I'm pretty sure they know its bad too. The only good quality of this product was the coverage which was a solid medium. Other than that, I was not a fan. 4. Colourpop Highlighters
I am generalizing their highlighters as a whole because I have not had success with either the super shock highlighter formula or the pressed powder highlight formula. Both draw attention to texture on the skin and break apart throughout the day. I'll say again, I do have pretty dry skin, but I don't have a ton of texture on my face so I found it very unusual that it made me look so textured. I tend to stay away from powder highlights as a whole because of my dry skin, but even my Maybelline Master Chrome highlight did not make my skin look this bad. It is such a shame too because both of these highlighter formulas are so bright and reflective, but they just look awful on my skin. 5. Colourpop Blushes I am a
lso generalizing Colourpop's blushes because I have issues with both their cream and powder formulas. I have their cream blush stick in the shade "Aloha", which is a gorgeous neutral peachy pink color. Unfortunately, it appears to oxidize throughout the day and turn orange. I have tried wearing this product on its own with and without foundation and every time it makes me look orange. I wish the color wouldn't oxidize because the formula is so good and the original color is beautiful. As for the pressed powder blushes, they are too pigmented and quite difficult to blend. I don't mind heavy pigment in my eyeshadows, but when it comes to blush, I prefer to build up a formula as its easy to get carried away, especially if you have a heavy hand with blush like me! I wish I could combine these 2 formulas to get a creamy blush that stays true to color, but for now, they've got too many issues for me. Well, that's it! That's my conclusive list of the best and worst products from Colourpop! Colourpop comes out with new products so frequently that there's bound to be a few duds! I appreciate the brand for being cruelty free and relatively affordable, but I hope they take note of these formula issues and continue to improve. Don't forget to check out my video review of these products for even more details!
